Prada S.p.A. is an Italian fashion house, established from 1913 by two brothers, Mario and Martino Prada. Originally a leather goods shop, named Fratelli Prada, Prada opened its doors in Milano, Italy.
Two generations later, Miuccia Prada took over the family-owned company in 1978. By implementing her creative designs into the collection, Prada eventually became known as a premier Italian fashion company.
In 1994, Prada released the nylon tote, made from military strength material, which went on to become a significant launch for the brand. It was during this time that Prada became recognized as an international status symbol.
Prada has since grown to offer collections for both men and women, including apparel, shoes, accessories and luggage with an edge of modernism balanced by simplicity in color and design. Although simple, there was a true originality in the Prada brand. This originality has made Prada one of the most influential fashion houses.
Time magazine described the apparel as “unassertive, combining traditional good manners and an ultramodern industrial sleekness.”
The company is also deeply rooted in the arts, commissioning architects, most notably Rem Koolhaas and Herzog & de Meuron, to design flagship stores in various locations.
