Retorial: The New E-Commerce

As covered in Refinery29′s recent article, retorial is becoming an increasingly popular strategy for ecommerce sites. Examples cited include Urban Outfitters, Shopbop and Net-a-Porter, selected because they offer something more than product shots and add to cart options. They provide additional information on trends, designer backgrounds, and more. Although all in the name of upselling, it is nonetheless valuable information. Plus, it adds depth to the online shopping experience, positions the brand/company as an expert, and communicates a lifestyle approach. As a user, there’s the notion that the brand understands its consumers aren’t just interested in the purchase of an item, but also in the industry in general.
